Fern, matteuccia struthiopteris

Fern, Ostrich

Ostrich Fern is one of the largest and most popular ferns available. The dark green, pinnate fronds of Matteuccia struthiopteris are wide at the top and tapering down to a bare strip. This deciduous fern typically grows 2-3 feet tall in cultivation, but may reach 6 feet tall in moist, cool climates in the wild. The showy parts of the Ostrich fern are the fronds which, as the common name suggests, exhibit the feathery appearance of long ostrich plumes. This Eastern United States native is happiest when placed near a pond or stream, needing moisture to look its best.
