Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop'
Bugleweed
Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop', also known as Bugleweed, makes a nice semi-evergreen groundcover. Plants quickly form a low carpet of rounded, glossy leaves, purple-black in colour with a crinkly or scalloped texture. Short spikes of deep blue flowers appear in mid to late spring and will add interest to any shady garden area. Evergreen in milder climates, this extremely hardy groundcover can be walked on, mowed over, and planted under large shade trees where grass is hard to establish. 'Black Scallop' stays more compact, making it a great edging plant. Nice in containers as well.
Bugleweed Growing and Maintenance Tips:
Plants are tolerant of poor soils but perform best in those that are evenly moist and well drained. Ajuga is by far one of the best groundcovers for shade.
