Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' - Lady Fern

Fern

Fern, Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum 'Lady in Red'

Lady fern

Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' features vibrant burgundy stems contrasting beautifully with the lacy, mint green fronds. Easy to grow preferring rich, medium to wet, well-drained soil. Terrific in containers, as a ground cover and for woodland gardens. Frond color is best when planted in part shade and the red stem color is most vibrant after the second winter dormancy. Fern foliage adds movement to the garden, swaying in the breezes. The finely divided fronds of ferns look especially nice next to large, solid leaves.

Prefers well-drained soil with average moisture, but this fern tolerates drier soil than other ferns. Shelter from wind to protect fronds from breaking. If fronds become tattered, cut them to the ground and new fronds will emerge.
