Liatris ligulistylis

Blazing Star

Liatris ligulistylis is an upright, clump-forming perennial that typically grows to 2’ (infrequently to 3’) tall in the wild. It may grow taller in cultivation, particularly if planted in rich, fertile garden soils. In Missouri, it typically occurs in rocky woods, rocky slopes, prairies, and gravel areas along streams. Fluffy, deep rose-purple flower heads appear on terminal clusters atop erect, leafy flower stems. Stems rise up from leaves. Blooms for up to 6 weeks in late summer to early fall. Flowers are very attractive to butterflies, especially the Monarch. Good fresh cut flower for floral arrangements.

Additional:

Arguably the #1 favorite nectar plant for monarch butterflies!! Also loved by swallowtails!
