Perennials

Monarda didyma 'Coral Reef'

Bee balm

Monarda didyma 'Coral Reef' produces heads of large, shaggy, coral-pink flowers in mid to late summer. Foliage is delightfully fragrant, and significantly more resistant to powdery mildew than most older varieties. Excellent for cutting. Attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, particularly when massed. Flowers, stems and leaves are all aromatic so place at the front of the garden or along pathways.

Additional:

Commonly called 'beebalm' in reference to a prior use of the leaves as a balm for bee stings.

A nectar source for the following butterflies--Cabbage White, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Mourning Cloak, Painted Lady, Silver Spotted Skipper

Bee balm Growing and Maintenance Tips:

Easily grown in average, moisture retentive soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers rich soils in full sun, but appreciates some afternoon shade in hot summer climates such as the St. Louis area. Remove spent flowers to improve plant appearance and prolong bloom.
